2019 NFL Championship Sunday
By Tom Barton
This weekend we have two championship games on deck that many are calling a changing of the guard.
41 year old Tom Brady will take on 23 year old Patrick Mahomes while 40 year old Drew Brees battles 24 year old Jared Goff. Make no mistake, while the running games and defense are obviously important these games this weekend will be decided by the stars, and those stars play the superstar position.
Consider this Drew Brees has already seen this Rams defense this season. He went 25-36 for 346 and 4 TD's. The Rams ranked 22nd in the league against #1 wide receivers and were torched by Michael Thomas for 211 yards on 12 catches. That is the same Thomas that went for 171 and 16 catches last week.
Jared Goff? All he did was throw for 391 yards and 3 TD's against these Saints back in November and scored 18 second half points.
The snow and wind projected in Kansas City has died down and it just looks like it'll be cold. That is good news for the QB's who want to throw the ball around the yard. Patrick Mahomes and the legend that he is turning into had a miraculous season throwing for 50 TD's but his coming out party was against these Patriots in Foxboro when he went out and threw for 352 yards and 4 TD's.
Tom Brady has been here and done it all but while his season ended on a quiet note we have to look closer to see how good he was this year, and steps up when they need him to. Brady threw for 343 last week and at one point was 19 of 20. Brady also dismantled this Chiefs defense for 340 in their first meeting. The Chiefs are playing better on defense but they are weaker against the short pass than most teams and that is where Brady thrives.
There will be much talk of how running and defense wins championships this weekend but in big games superstars step up and these are the super stars that will take center stage.
